Bhikkhus, as long as the bhikkhus share without partiality, together with their virtuous companions, all righteous, lawful gains, even down to the contents of their alms bowls, then the bhikkhus will prosper and not decline.

Rāhula, for one who knowingly speaks falsely, without shame and fear, I say there is no evil he will not do. Therefore, Rāhula, 'I will not speak falsely, even for a joke' — thus, Rāhula, you should train.

Furthermore, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu, when walking for alms in the village or town, does not receive coarse or fine food as much as he wishes. He thinks: 'I walked for alms in the village or town and did not receive coarse or fine food as much as I wished. Now my body is tired and cannot bear it. Let me lie down.' He lies down, not making an effort... unrealized. Bhikkhus, this is the fifth ground for laziness.

        - Venerable Sir, in my family there is giving. Bhikkhus who are forest-dwellers, almsfood-eaters, rag-robe wearers, Arahants or those practicing the Arahant path, Venerable Sir, such bhikkhus receive alms.
- Certainly, householder, this is indeed difficult for you, a layperson enjoying sensual pleasures, bound by children, using Kāsi sandalwood, wearing and anointing with garlands, scents, perfumes, using gold and silver, to know who is an Arahant and who is practicing the Arahant path. A forest-dwelling bhikkhu, householder, if he is restless, arrogant, agitated, talkative, garrulous, unmindful, not clearly comprehending, unconcentrated, with distracted mind, loose faculties — then in that respect he is to be criticized. Nevertheless, householder, make offerings to the Saṅgha. If you make offerings to the Saṅgha, your mind will be serene. If your mind is serene, at death, with the breakup of the body, you will be reborn in a good destination, a heavenly world.

Bhikkhus, 'This Dhamma is for one who is wise, this Dhamma is not for one of evil wisdom' — thus it has been said. For what reason is it said?
Bhikkhus, here, a bhikkhu has wisdom, possessing wisdom that penetrates arising and passing away, with the noble penetration leading to the complete destruction of suffering. Bhikkhus, 'This Dhamma is for one who is wise, this Dhamma is not for one of evil wisdom' — thus it has been said, and for this reason it was said.

'For their whole life, the Arahants have abandoned taking what is not given, refrained from taking what is not given, take only what is given, desire only what is given, live purely, without stealing. Today, this night and this day, I also abandon taking what is not given, refrain from taking what is not given, take only what is given, desire only what is given, live purely, without stealing. By this factor, following the example of the Arahants, I will observe the uposatha day.' This is the second factor accomplished.

At that time, the Venerable Ānanda was living too busy with many contacts among laypeople. Then a devata dwelling in that forest, out of compassion for the Venerable Ānanda, wishing for his welfare, wishing to arouse him, approached him. Having approached, that devata spoke these verses to the Venerable Ānanda:

You have chosen to live
At the root of a tree,
Your mind has resolved on one thing:
The goal of Nibbāna.
Gotama, practice jhāna,
Live, do not be heedless,
What use are those idle talks
And meaningless conversations to you?
